A pic thats been in my head for a while. Done over 2 weeks.

i like all the astros really, and thought it would be cool to put all of them together, so you can see the differences. (there may be other astros i've missed out, but these are the main ones, i think, excluding things like the comic 'pluto' etc).

Also let me point out that these are like stereotypes, if you like, of that particular astro. What i mean is, there are times when the manga astro looks like the 80's astro, and vice versa. i just picked up on the features which i think kept popping up in that series.

Main features i noticed:

*Manga:

His hair bends inwards and sticks out alot. His eyes are often just full black. He has joint lines. He uses his arm rockets alot. Small ears. His dialog is often typical super hero, not really very unique.

*60's:

Has a colour to his eyes, despite the greyscale. still has joint lines. some confusion over how many fingers on each hand. sometimes 3, sometimes 4. still has bendy hair. In the anime he is very sensible, with an english voice which i think suits him. i love his interaction with the audience.

*80's:

Much shorter. He has smaller boots which start lower down his legs, and he can take them off. Still occasional joint lines. Ridiculously high voice, which is cute, but at the same time makes you cringe. not really very super-hero-ish. tiny underwear in proportion to the rest of him. Small ears again.

*2003:

Brighter eyes, much taller. Longer legs with boots pulled right up. pants are longer in proportion to his body. No joint lines. highlights on his body. Sharper hair, which does not bend inwards. hairline is further up his forehead. Hands definitely have 4 fingers, and are larger. feet more rounded, boots dont come off. Bigger ears.

*Movie:

Well...yeah you can see the differences. New design to his boots, he has a buckle to his belt. his underwear is more like black shorts. Lost the cutesie roundness to his cheeks ,and hair sticks out more. More human-like hands.

I'm hoping the images will show the differences, you know.

i dont own astroboy, silly!, i just wanted to draw him over and over XD.

(watermarked until i can find somewhere to put a sig)

2003, movie and 19803 are my favorite! And yes, that 1980s voice did make me cringe at first but then it quickly went to awww cuz hes soo innocent! The movie kinda burned though..but the 2003 was amazing! Sorry, big fan girl, im going to shut up now xD

As a 63 years old character, he changed much and many times. But you gave a great resume of all the main features.
I think every author can personalize it a bit; in my case, I prefer giving him Megaman's Legs: we know who inspired who, and more robotic boots fits more than 'real' (?) ones on Astro.

You say that you don' like very much the voice of 1980's original version; personally I adore it. It's childish because he's a child. But I understand the problems you can see.
The visible joints on his body is a great feature, but sometimes I prefer to not use it. There's not a particular reason. The fact you can easily reckognize him as a robot is an important feature for the story, not only for the graphic style.
When he loses them in 2003's series, I missed them a bit. But, unlike the 1980's series, he prefers not to dress too much: he knows that every fabric will go in pieces if he starts using his power; he does not need clothes, and that's a proof of what he really is.
The movie one, eh... joy and pain about that Astro: I saw they made his body a bit different, with those pants and that belt. He IS like that, they're not his wear. In your drawing he seems to be more confident than we saw in the movie, maybe he's the Astro we see in the very end scene... but Astro is not Superman. He's a boy, before than a hero. That's a feature I can't stand in 2009's movie. His moves and expressions are too American, a bit too far from the hero we knew from childhood.
Well, is good if Astro has not to see everyday someone dying before his eyes, but his main feature is not his power, but the fact he's alive, he know who is he, he can decide for himself.
The 2003's series is the best for that: fights and feelings are both important, and you can see Astro's double nature: a high performing robot and a little boy trying to get a clue in the crazy world where he lives.

I like all the astros but my favourite is the 2003 version; i felt he was the best written in terms of personality and backstory and feelings.

The movie was okay but i think of it as something seperate and not part of the original series

2003 astroboy is one of my top favourite anime full stop.

80's Astro Boy was really cute, although there are so many scenes where he gets hurt XD

2003 Astro Boy was freaking adorable, his eyes and stuff and just.. :iconiloveitplz:

I really liked the 2009 version. In most of the animes people consider Toby/Astro to be 9 or 10 years old, in the movie he's 13 (When the robot put him in that closet, he mentioned Toby's age). Still adorable in this version too xD
